Together Everyone Achieves More | Spring 2015

Congratulations to the Power Up for 30 team from Clayton County’s Morrow Elementary School: Physical Education teacher, Teresa Wheeler, Principal, Tammy Burroughs, and fifth grade teacher, Kelly Camp.  This remarkable trio has been named Power Up for 30’s Superstar Shout-out for their efforts in going above and beyond for their students’ health and well-being.

Since their Power Up for 30 training, the team committed to promoting physical activity through the addition of scheduled recess, before and after school opportunities, and classroom brain boosters.

To start, the team blocked fifteen minutes for each grade level to have daily recess. PE teacher, Teresa Wheeler says, “Just having this option available for teachers has encouraged them to take advantage and give their students time to move.”

Teresa also adds, the before school physical activity program not only provides more opportunities for activity, but also encourages chronically tardy students to “get to school early” so they can participate.

This past fall, Morrow Elementary School secured grant funding from Kaiser Permanente's Thriving Schools to purchase soccer goals and physical activity equipment and provide funds for Morrow’s Mileage Club, an after school physical activity program for students, families, and school staff. Teresa encourages schools to seek out grant opportunities, “Funders have money to help you get your program started and to be successful…the process is easier than you think.”

Morrow’s Power Up for 30 team also provides brain boosters for classroom teachers to use as behavior and task management tools.  Kellie Kelleher, a third grade teacher at Morrow Elementary, explains when she sees her students fidgeting with paper, drawing, or looking around, she turns-on a short brain booster to get them moving and refocused.

Ms. Wheeler, Ms. Burroughs, and Ms. Camp truly are praiseworthy Power Up for 30 Superstars. Teresa modestly explains that she is “just having fun!” Her motivation is seeing her students physically active  and enjoying themselves. As a result of the team’s hard work and Power Up for 30 success, Morrow Elementary School plans to apply for recognition through Governor’s Shape Honor Roll. We look forward to seeing Morrow Elementary School’s Power Up for 30 team continuing to inspire and motivate their students, community, staff, and anyone they comes across in the process.

To nominate a school team for the next Power Up for 30 Superstar Shout-out, please email powerupfor30@georgiashape.org. Nominations accepted through June 1, 2015.

Students, families, and staff have fun at Mileage Club, Morrow Elementar's after school physical activity program.
