Get Active with a Free Trip to Zoo Atlanta
Georgia families can have a fun, active day at the zoo courtesy of Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Public Library Service. The Zoo Atlanta Family Pass program gives free admission for a family of four to adults with a valid library card. The Family Pass program began in February 2011 and has provided Georgia children with opportunities to visit the zoo, participate in its programs and special events. Carrollton City Schools recognized for healthy lunches
On April 11, Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, and First Lady Sandra Deal visited Carrollton City Schools to congratulate them on being awarded the USDA’s Gold award. Carrollton City Schools is the first school district in Georgia to achieve the Gold award in the Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge, a voluntary national certification for schools participating in the national School Lunch Program. The USDA established the Healthier US Schools Challenge to recognize schools that create healthier school environments by providing nutrition education, nutritious food and beverage choices, physical education and opportunities for physical activity.Read more
Gov. launches initiative to improve child fitness
Gov. Nathan Deal and the Georgia Department of Public Health launched Georgia SHAPE, a statewide program merging governmental, philanthropic and academic and business communities to address the state’s childhood obesity epidemic on May 23, 2012. First Lady Sandra Deal; Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health; the Atlanta Falcons; the Arthur M.
