Atlanta Track Club offers a free, incentive-based youth running program - Kilometer Kids. The program focuses on inspiring youth to achieve health and fitness through a fun and supportive running program, empowering children with the knowledge they need to make smart lifestyles choices.
Kilometer Kids seeks to create lifelong runners, instilling in participants the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Through the program, kids learn that exercise is a fun and rewarding activity, opening the door for physical activity to become a lifelong habit.
Kilometer Kids has grown significantly and now impacts more than 6,500 children each year in metro Atlanta and beyond. The program is funded by Atlanta Track Club, private donations and partners including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, Atlanta Braves Foundation, Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, Chick-fil-A and PNC Bank.
The 11-week Kilometer Kids program is open to any child between the ages of 7 and 14, and is designed for use by schools and groups as well as parents and families. The program encourage the youth to culminate the program by participating in the Peachtree Junior on May 16, 2015.
A few of the program features include:
- Free access to curriculum, including running game ideas and tracking tools.
- Incentive items to all participants who reach their mileage goals.
- Flexibility - parents, teachers and site coordinators can begin the program in the fall or spring.
- Opportunity to participate in free, mid-week fun runs and other youth running events organized by Atlanta Track Club.
Atlanta Track Club’s Kilometer Kids has been privileged to work with Georgia SHAPE and its Power Up for 30 initiatives over the past few years. Currently 36 of 112 Kilometer Kids schools have incorporated Power Up for 30 into their daily physical education, health and fitness goals.
Together, it’s been an exciting collaborative approach to improve Georgia’s future, beginning with elementary schools. Kilometer Kids and Georgia Shape both have been extremely committed to improving the health of young people by offering assistance and opportunity to achieve a greater level of overall fitness.
